Jonathan was born in Belfast into an artistic family. His
mother was an art teacher and his father was a painter,
mosaicist and interior designer. Jonathan moved to Edinburgh
in the mid 1980s and after graduating from Napier University
with a BA in photography, began developing his own mosaic
style. Several years ago deciding to build mosaics full time
he opened a studio in the “out of the blue” arts complex in
Leith.
He has produced a wide variety of work from table tops and
splashbacks to large floor panels. Jonathan cites his
influences as coming mostly from early twentieth century
abstract painters, whilst still holding a fascination for
the grand mosaics of the Byzantine, Christian and Islamic
artists of the past.
Whilst teaching, Jonathan’s work remains sought after and he
has been commissioned to create pieces in private houses
throughout the UK.
